Slicing

Slice the rhythm with precision energy sabers.

Slicing is the fundamental gameplay mechanic of Beat Saber, defining how players interact with the rhythm-based environment. In this virtual reality experience, users wield two energy sabers to cut through blocks that fly toward them in synchronization with the music.

This action serves as both the primary method of scoring points and the means of progression through a song. Successful slicing maintains combo multipliers and preserves health, while failures deplete resources, creating a tension between rhythm accuracy and survival within the digital arena.

Lore & Background

In a dystopian future where music is restricted by an oppressive regime, rhythm becomes an act of rebellion. The sabers are not merely weapons but conduits for freedom, allowing users to shatter digital barriers imposed by the Corporation.

The void surrounding the player represents a controlled space where sound is weaponized against authority. By cutting through blocks with precision, players reclaim the right to experience music without interference. This struggle is visualized through neon geometry and pulsating light.

In Their Own Story

The void stretches endlessly around you. A low hum vibrates through your controllers as the first beat drops. Red and blue shards materialize from the darkness, spiraling toward your chest. You raise your sabers, feeling the weightless energy crackle along the edges.

With a sharp swing, the red block shatters into sparks. The music swells, demanding faster movements. Walls slide in to block your vision, forcing you to duck and weave between the rhythm. Every cut is a declaration of existence.

Reader's Guide

Players wield two virtual sabers, one in each hand, corresponding to blue blocks on the left and red blocks on the right. Blocks fly toward the player from a distance, marked with arrows indicating the required slice direction: up, down, left, or right. To score points, players must swing their saber through the block precisely as it reaches the target zone.

Timing determines the rating: Perfect for exact hits, Great for near misses, Good for acceptable timing, and Miss if the block passes untouched. Maintaining a combo multiplier increases total score, but hitting obstacles or missing blocks breaks the chain. Obstacles are solid walls that must be dodged rather than sliced; colliding with them reduces health.

A health bar depletes on every miss or obstacle collision. If health reaches zero before the song concludes, the run fails immediately. Players can adjust difficulty settings to change block density and speed, challenging their rhythm synchronization skills against various musical genres within the virtual arena environment.
